This is Danny Yee's review of Conversation in the Cathedral by Mario Vargas Llosa. The work of fiction is a novel about power and politics in Peru in the early 1950's. It presents a clear picture of how a Latin American military dictatorship actually works. The structure is a dialogue between two characters who meet in a cheap house (the 'cathedral') and spend the afternoon talking about the past, and thus elucidating the environment and their lives under the dictatorship.
